If you are like most users, then you probably have a few (justified) questions about the security practices involved in using proxy servers. Many users think that it is easy for proxy servers to steal information from unsuspecting victims, simply because of the fact that all traffics pass through the proxy first before even reaching the site you are trying to access.

There is a high possibility that your data may be stolen when it is routed through an unreliable proxy server. However, that’s not always the case. There are also good proxy servers that truly provide secured anonymous browsing experiences.

While it is true that a lot of the proxy servers available today are being run by highly skilled hackers who are more than capable of extracting personal information from users all over the world, the biggest mistake that users make is using proxies the wrong way. If you are using a fraudulent proxy server, then you are most likely at risk of being spied on. However, proxies that are truly legit will ultimately keep your identity, IP address, and personal information away from stalkers, hackers, and all other potential cybercriminals.

How Do Proxy Servers Work?

In the figure above, you can see that when you are connecting to a proxy server to access a certain website, you are basically sharing your IP address with the proxy server. The proxy server will then request access to the desired website using a separate IP (on your behalf), which in turn exposes the proxy’s IP address to the website.

So instead of your IP address being recognized by the website, it is the proxy’s IP that the website sees (hence the term “proxy”). Unfortunately, this method of requesting access to websites can have some minor security implications.

The problem with proxy servers is that they know your IP and they can also see your data since every request and website responses you get are all routed through the proxy server.

Can I Trust My Proxy Server?

But no need to freak out just yet. As long as you are accessing a HTTPS website, you can confidently browse through the web pages and login with your personal details. An example of such website includes https://mail.google.com, https://facebook.com, and https://youtube.com. Since HTTPS websites deploy an encrypted connection between your computer and their platform, your proxy server will not be able to decipher the encrypted content of the communications.

It’s all about trusting the right proxy server company. Even if you are confident that the website you are trying to access has the best encryption system there is, you are still not spared from any spying and snooping practices by your proxy server. You may not know it, but your proxy server had probably already installed a malicious software on your computer that could steal your login information.
