A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is your ultimate protection against all kinds of online security threats like viruses, theft, spying practices and unauthorized accesses to user data. The internet poses a lot of cyberthreats, but with the use of a reliable VPN service, you should be able to prevent hackers from targeting your computer.
The internet is a dangerous place, so ideally your VPN service should be as reliable and secure as possible at all times. Unfortunately, VPNs also occasionally experience technical problems, which is why you should know what to do if your VPN ever fails.
Although customer support is available on most occasions, you should not always rely on what they can do to help you. You need to be able to determine the VPN errors and initially try to resolve them to re-establish a smooth and stable VPN connection yourself before contacting support. After all, these VPN errors are relatively easy to fix, and even a non-tech user can heal them up on their own without too much of a hassle. Here are the four common VPN errors that you will most likely come across during daily usage.
VPN Speed Drops
A small drop in speed is normal with a VPN due to the way traffic is routed through a separate server. However, if you are experiencing massive speed drops, even slower than your regular internet speed, it might be because you are connected to a very distant VPN server. The further the server you are connected to from your home location, the more impact it will have on your download speeds.
Possible Solution: Try connecting to the VPN server closest to your location and see if you get better speeds. The security protocol you are using can also affect your speed, i.e. the higher the level of encryption you are using, the slower your speeds will be.
VPN Periodically Disconnecting
When your VPN shuts down on multiple occasions during a session, this could be due to your computer’s default power saving features. This function may be automatically disabling your VPN connection because your computer sees it as a power-hungry application and will disable it if you’re running on a laptop battery alone.
Possible solution: To continue using your VPN without any interruptions, you should disable all power saving features on your computer. If you want to keep the power save options running, you can simply select a security protocol that does not drain the battery that much. OpenVPN uses hard encryptions, so you may want to use PPTP instead.
VPN Error 800
This error indicates that your system is unable to establish a VPN connection, which is primarily due to the VPN client being unable to reach the VPN server. There are three reasons why this error occurs: First, the VPN client could be incorrectly configured. Secondly, the VPN server is overloaded with traffic requests. And lastly, the VPN network is temporarily down.
Possible Solution: There is really nothing you can do if the VPN network is actually down, so the best thing to do is to contact your VPN service provider and inform them of the error. You may also try to completely disable your firewall (only temporarily) and see if that will solve the problem. Your computer’s firewall is usually the culprit, and might be blocking the VPN client from establishing a connection.
If you are using multiple different internet connections over a short period of time, this could affect how your VPN works. Whenever you connect to the internet, your computer is assigned a unique IP address and will be able to access the internet via DNS. However, if you switch to a different connection (say for example from WiFi to phone data), the server will now see that your computer is incorrectly configured with old or conflicting DNS server information.
Possible Solution: To prevent DNS leaks, configure your computer’s DNS server setting to a fixed route, such as Google Public DNS, Comodo Secure DNS, or OpenDNS. Some VPNs also offer their own DNS server details. Check with your VPN if this feature is available.
